Day 7 (June 28): Aurland —> Gudvangen —> Bergen.
Today was mostly a travel day, but we did kick it off with an electric powered ferry from Aurland to Gudvangen.
Side note: At brekkie this morning, we met yet another person from the US who came to Europe to see a concert. They are seeing Bruce Springsteen in Oslo in a venue that only holds 5000 people. How cool is that? And scalpers are outlawed over here? Even better!
Back to the ferry. Aurland was great but it was time to move on. The ferry ride was gorgeous. We had fantastic weather and saw a few small towns along the way. The pics do not do it justice. The fjords were a big reason for this trip and I wasn’t disappointed.
The rest of the journey to Bergen wasn’t that interesting except we passed through a town holding a “cliff jumping” competition where people were in lawn chairs along the side of the road watching. They had a bullseye and everything to help the jumpers. No word on if all of the competitors finished intact.
Upon arriving in Bergen, we took a quick walk around before dinner to get oriented. We made a plan to hike tomorrow and checked out the local ‘fisketorget’, which is their fish market. It reminded us a lot of Pike Place Market at home.
I am very excited to try the local seafood. Last night, we even had halibut that was from the fjord we were staying near. Oh, and Marc liked it but he wanted to stay focused on the chocolate for obvious reasons.
At dinner last night, I had some local mussels that were from just off of the coast here in Bergen as well as what is loosely translated to as ‘red fish’. It’s a white fish and was pan-seared. Really enjoyed it. You can see the photos here.
To close things out with some trivia, if any of you saw the movie, “The Menu”, you’ll recall the restaurant was on an island and guests were ferried over. Well when we were at dinner on Saturday night, the chef told us that the movie was based on a restaurant that was on one of the neighboring islands of Bergen. It’s true. Wikipedia said so, so it must be true, right?
